CTF-Bridge XL and CTF-Cretin:

Two New CTF Maps:
CTF-Bridge XL & CTF-Cretin

An overview of CTF-Bridge XL

CTF-Cretin from above and behind the Blue Base

CTF-Bridge XL is a wide-open map and, in many ways, not all that different from CTF-Exor. It is a smaller map with compact flag bases that each have several side passages. The outside area has three levels with two that traverse the map. Unlike CTF-Exor, however, the bridge does have a lower level that crosses to the other side much as it does on CTF-Noctambulent. The map appears to be completely balanced. Weapons, power-ups, and health packs have been carefully placed and are evenly distributed. It probably won't be a blood-bath like CTF-Lucius' Pit, but scoring is going to be a very daunting task without a lot of covering fire from your team mates.

CTF-Cretin is an absolute gem of city-type map. The Cat Bots rule on this thing, so don't engage them in the tight spaces or you'll be saying hello to Mr. Chainsaw. I found it much easier to just avoid the bots by sticking to the roof-tops as much as possible. There is a trade off in that strategy. Each side has three auto-cannons that can drop your health points faster than the Palm Beach County Canvassing Board finds votes for the Presidency...Two on each side are roof mounted and have a 360 x 180 degree firing bubble...You cannot get behind them. They are really lethal and you need to have your escape route well planned if want to get past them without respawning.

I discovered no bugs or errors of any type on either of these maps. Should you happen to turn one up, please let me know about it.

Cat Bots organize protest in CTF-Acid Pipe!:

Mass Cat Bot Protest in CTF-Acid Pipe

The Cat Bots lay out their demands to the Server Admin

The dreaded Cat Bots gathered today in the Red Flag room of CTF-Acid Pipe to make known their demands for continued play. The leader of the protest, Cat Bot - El Gato Diablo, stated the group's demands for the UT Press Corp. "We have played long enough under these absurd and very oppressive conditions!"...he said. When asked about specifics, Diablo went on to say, "How can we be expected to continue to play while we're set to run at the Masterful Level? It's just not fair that we are handicapped when we are forced to face the awesome powers and skillz of Chronos." He continued, "If we are not elevated to the Godlike setting, I simply do not see how a strike can be averted."

Negotiations continue at press time as the leaders of both factions work desperately to resolve their differences before the 5:00pm CST start up time for the Stuffed Cats Inc. Server. So far, all violence has been restricted to the UT game maps, but as tensions grow, both sides have refused to offer any assurances that the peaceful meetings will continue. When asked for a comment, the leading Dead Cat spokesman, [DC] Spot, replied, "Bite me!"

The Weekend Set Up for the Dead Cat Servers

Weekend server arrangements:

Here's what it'll be:

The Stuffed Cats Inc. Server, at, will run it's usual sequence of maps...In fact, the same rotation that ran last night will be in place. As the spirit moves me, I may or may not put other maps in the rotation...Four that I am giving serious consideration to are Noork's, Templar, Project-X, and Blasted. I realize that there are minor frame rate problems with Blasted and Project-X, but I believe the fun factor far outweighs the difficulties.

The Dead Kitty's UT Server, at, will start out tonight running the 4-Team DM sequence I had up earlier this month: Kitchen, Gameroom, Bedroom, Sands, and Lost Tombs of Ra. In addition, I am going to throw in 3rd Space Beacon. It may create real frame problems for those with slower machines and wimpy video cards. It is, however, truly unique in that it's the only DM map I've ever seen that is more about hunting and stalking than just having shootouts. The server will be on a 30 minute rotation, so if you don't like the map, just skip it and come back later. I've also never had it up in low gravity and that makes it an entirely different map. The mountains are accessible so you cannot hog the roof of the dome without being sniped.

I have been checking new CTF maps on a daily basis, but nothing worthwhile has turned up.

CTF-Accelerator and CTF-Breathe:

Two New CTF Maps:
CTF-Accelerator & CTF-Breathe

The accelerator room and its control panels

An overview of the common area in CTF-Breathe

CTF-Accelerator resembles CTF-Lucius's Pit, but the likeness is only cosmetic. It is a much larger map with several side passage-ways and multiple levels that traverse the layout. The large central room also has cross-over ramps so that if you're hit when you come out of the accelerator tube, there is at least a small possibility that you can save yourself by landing on ramp before you die in the abyss below. This map is about tight defense. If the opposing team gets your flag out of your base, unless a sniper saves it, they'll probably score.

CTF-Breathe is a multi-sectional map like CTF-Candenza, in fact created by the same map maker, but very different in character. Although it is considerably smaller, it is far more open in its construction than the enormous CTF-Cadenza. The Cat Bots are very good on it, but there is ample room to engage them without getting down to the chainsaw level. There are a couple of tight spots, but I found it fairly easy to draw the bots out in the open, kill them, and then move through the choke point.

Screenshot Preview of RUNE

Close combat in RUNE:

I'm sure that by now many of you have already played the demo version of the soon to be released game RUNE. I have already been through it four times. Once each on easy, medium, and hard...and then one more time on medium to get the screenshots linked below. The screenshots that are currently available on the various websites are of extremely low resolution and really make the game's graphics look pretty bad. When I loaded RUNE on a machine running a VooDoo3 2000, I was stunned by the results. Rune has graphics, that is many ways, are far superior to Unreal Tournament. The shots below were captured at a resolution of 1280x1024 using a VooDoo5 5500.

I'm not going to write a detailed review of the game based soley on the demo version. It is strictly a close-combat melee style game. Swords, axes, and clubs are the only weapons. It is a lot of fun in a chainsaw sort of way. There are no provisions, that I could find, for team games of any type. I do not believe Epic needs to worry about RUNE replacing UT any time soon. If, however, you need to vent and want a really violent death match environment to do it in, I think RUNE is your cup of tea.
