Making and Viewing Unreal Tournament Recorded Games

Impossible screen-shots made possible:

Screen-Shots From "Freaks.dem" Movie

Jumping the wall after taking the flag...

Final flag capture...

The two seemingly impossible screen-shots above were actually not done in real-time, but captured from the short UT game movie "Freaks.dem" during a replay of the sequences. After many hours of unsuccessful attempts to record a game, the solution is finally here. Follow the steps below and it is a relatively simple process.

***See Note Added On 08/21/00***

To record a demo:

1.) Set up a multiplayer game on your machine or get ready to join a game on-line.

2.) Open the console by hitting the Shift plus the ~ key

3.) Type the command: demorec (filename) i.e. - With Freaks.dem it was: demorec freaks

4.) After the game is over, or you're finished recording, hit Esc, open the console and type: stopdemo

To play back a demo:

1.) Open the console and type: demoplay (filename) i.e. - With Freaks.dem it would be: demoplay freaks

2.) Hit Esc once or twice and you'll enter the demo playback

3.) Hit the Fire key to change views and you can see the game from the persepctive of each of the players...4 or 5 taps will take you to the [DC] Toonces view of the game

4.) Hitting the AltFire key will always take you directly back to the spectator view which allows you to fly around the entire map at will...I recommend watching the Freaks.dem recording this way and start at the opening of the tunnel directly below the Shield-Belt on the red side. About 15 to 20 seconds into the recording you'll see [DC] Toonces run up the tunnel and grab the Strength Relic. You can follow the action from there.

5.) If you want to stop the demo before it ends, hit Esc and open the console. Then type: stopdemo

The only caveat is that playing a demo recording always defaults your name to "player" and you have to go back into the "Player Options" and re-enter your character's name.

If you'd like to see the demo recording Freaks.dem, the zip file may be downloaded here:

Download: CTF-Freaks Come Out at Night - Movie

Unzip the file into your Unrealtournament\System directory and follow the instructions above...Then make your own movie!

The next time we have a Dead Cat vs. Bullet Time match, I plan to record the entire game. That way even if I only kill Barkeep once, I can enjoy the moment over and over again...:-)

***Note Added 08/21/00*** - You may experience compatibility problems with demos recorded on machines that are using maps, textures, voices, or mods that are not resident on your machine. When I made the "Freaks.dem" movie, I still had the "Austin" and the "Dark Lord" voices installed on my PC at home. The file would not run on my machine at work until I reinstalled those two voice packages. Any demo recorded on your machine should run on your machine. When we record matches, I will be sure to distribute a list of the requisite files required to view the demo.

Five Maps From "Big Balou" On Dead Kitty's UT Server
Posted by Toonces T. Cat on Friday, August 18th, 2:30 PM CDT

Three old and two new maps from Big Balou:

CTF-Hill Forts

The View Above the Red Base

Above the River Crossing On the Way to the Blue Base

CTF-Desert Fox

The Box Canyon Holding the Red Base

Above an Oasis Located in the Central Canyon

Along with the newly introduced CTF-Hill Forts and CTF-Desert Fox, the Dead Kitty's UT Server will also be running three more maps by Big Balou: CTF-Templar, CTF-Purple Flame, and the very vertical CTF-Howling Gods.

All five of these maps are large open-air jump-fests. The rules and settings will be exactly the same as on the Stuffed Cats Inc. Server. The Cat Bots will be set at level-5 and the maps will rotate on a "40 minutes or 6 flags" cycle. All the usual mods and mutators, plus the relics, will also be in place.

These are not hectic, non-stop action, fire-fight maps. They are clearly designed to be played at a slower more relaxed pace than a CTF-AcidPipe style of map. That is the whole idea. If you want faster paced, low gravity play, the Stuffed Cats Inc. Server will be running the usual rotation.

CTF-Valley of the Giants v1.0 on the Stuffed Cats Inc. Server

The Finished Version of CTF-Valley of the Giants on the Stuffed Cats Inc. Server:

CTF-Valley of the Giants

Eric Poggel has finished the map, CTF-Valley of the Giants, after running two beta versions through our servers. The major change in the final version is the simple addition of a few Nali fruit plants in the Valley itself. This feature makes a huge difference in a flag runner's ability to make a capture and get back to their home base alive.

If you like the look of the map in the screen-shot above versus the mist filled version, Eric has passed on a neat little trick in the "Readme" enclosed in the zip file. Open the "Advanced Options" menu and go to the "Rendering" section. Expand it and select "Volumetric Lighting" and set it to "False." That will eliminate the mist and may improve your frame rate to boot!

Meet the New Members of the Dead Cats
Posted by Toonces T. Cat on Saturday, August 10th, 6:00 PM CDT

Meet [DC] Spot and [DC] Necrosis Cat:

We have two new members in the Dead Cat Clan:

Jim Marks has been on the Stuffed Cats Inc. server as "JimmyZ" and will now be using the name [DC] Spot. And, Dan Zampino who's been using the names "Necrosis & Iggy" on the servers will now use the name [DC] NecrosisCat. Be sure to give them both a big Dead Cat "Hey!" when you see them in the game. I'm sure the Bullet Time folks will subject them to the the usual initiation ritual.

All the details for both [DC] Spot and [DC] NecrosisCat are available on the "Members" page.

Urban Nightmares on the Dead Kitty's UT Server

CTF Urban Nightmares on the Dead Kitty's UT Server:

The Dead Kitty's UT Server will return to life tonight featuring the... package at IP: The server will also run this rotation all weekend.

The following CTF maps will be in the rotation:

CTF-City of Synn / CTF-Urban Hot Zone / CTF-Urban Riot / CTF-City Intro / CTF-Midtown

I urge everyone to get the files before you get on the server as some of the pushes, even the redirected-compressed pushes, are very large. The links above will take you directly to the zip files. If some of the zips contain texture files with the same name, especially a3text.utx, do not worry about it. Several maps share that file and one of them is just as good as the other. If you have any doubts about this file, use the one contained in the CTF-City of Synn zip file as it is definitely compatible with all of the maps we are currently using.

Screen-Shots of the new maps may be seen here:

Pictures from CTF-Urban Riot, CTF-City Intro, and CTF-Midtown

The zip files for the three new maps are up now and you can get them here:

CTF-Jupiter Run and CTF-City of Synn on Stuffed Cats Inc.
Posted by Toonces T. Cat on Wednesday, August 9th, 3:30 PM CDT

CTF-Jupiter Run and CTF-City of Synn on the Stuffed Cats Inc. Server:

Two new maps will be going up on Stuffed Cats Inc. tonight:

CTF-Jupiter Run

This is a huge indoor map with lots of hiding places, very high ceilings and lots of guns, guns, and more guns! I was unable to find any errors in the map. Any and all feedback will be greatly appreciated.

CTF-City of Synn

At last we have a well-balanced and well designed urban style map. It is much larger than CTF-Urban Hot Zone, although not nearly as large as CTF-Zeitkind. The author made some really excellent texture choices and I do not think anyone will have any frame problems at all with this map.

There are 3 major levels to play on, plus the inside of many of the buildings. In addition to the roof-tops, there are the street level and an underground sewer complex that is both vast and complicated. Much of the lower level is quite tight. So, if you try to mix it up with the Cat Bots down there, I don't want to hear any complaints about how tough they are.

I did find one small error. You can fall through the roof of the tallest building, but it is not a fatal BSP error and you just wind up at street level behind the structure.

I've produced a page of screen-shots of both maps and even had cooperation from a well known federal agency in preparing one of the images.

Please feel free to view them Here: Screen-Shots of CTF-Jupiter Run and CTF-City of Synn

The zip files for both maps are up now and you can get them here:
